In the self-reflexive work of Thai filmmaker Sorayos Prapapan, independent film production and culture provide a foundation on which Prapapan builds quietly savage and funny social critiques. He sets his sights on the hierarchical structure of Thai society, corruption and military influence, but also on the clout of the West, seen through the prism of the film festival circuit. Films such as Fat Boy Never Slim and Friend With Benefits, Without Benefits are understated gems.

The programme is accompanied by an exclusive interview with Sorayos conducted by writer Gail Tolley.

Boonrerm is at her mistress's beck and call 24/7. She finds herself doing the strangest things.

Fat Boy Never Slim

Two fat Thai schoolboys don’t want to do military service. They discuss alternatives over a meal.

Mono, Monorail

Sorayos records the sound of men cleaning a train at Hualumpong Station, Bangkok in September 2017.

Friend With Benefits, Without Benefits

Nicky asks his friend Koi to be the model for a photoshoot.

Prelude of the Moving Zoo

Dusit Zoo closed to the public in 2018. The filmmaker records the zoo's last day in his own idiosyncratic way. This is not without setbacks.
