Rise of the Empathy Machines: Do Androids Dream on Silver Screens?

24 March

Can artificial intelligences make cinema? If they do, is it really cinema? And what would it look like? ALT/KINO presents a programme of experimental films made with algorithms, machine learning, and A.I. that explore these questions and much more. The role of machine learning is becoming increasingly prevalent in the modern world, governing everything from how you open your smartphone, to which films you are recommended on streaming platforms.

As systems get more intelligent, questions are being raised about whether they are capable of imagination. Ranging from the algorithmic compression of images to reveal their inner truth to a new film generated in response to the complete works of Jean-Luc Godard, the films in this programme investigate and illustrate the potential of machine creativity. Featuring work by Google’s Image Recognition A.I. and Jan Bot, the A.I. at the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam.

All films captioned for d/Deaf viewers.

This programme is presented in partnership with London Short Film Festival.
